Start Before You Think You Need To

If your UI is hard-coded around English string lengths, you’ll spend engineering time on text overflow bugs that should never have existed. - Attach context: screenshots, video clips, or at minimum a text description of where and how each string appears. This single step cuts translator query volume substantially.
- Send with a style guide and glossary. Not a 40-page document. A two-page brief covering tone, target audience, any terminology the game uses that needs consistency, and a list of proper nouns that should not be translated.
- Set a clear turnaround expectation. Professional vendors need 1,500-2,500 words per day per translator as a realistic throughput estimate. Don’t expect 20,000 words back in three days.
- First-pass review by a native speaker on your team or a hired proofreader, always. Even good vendors have output that needs a game-fluent eye.
In-context review is the one most teams skip entirely, and it’s where you catch the worst bugs. Strings that look fine in a spreadsheet can be completely broken in-engine: truncated, overlapping, grammatically weird when the player name gets inserted dynamically. You need at least one pass where a reviewer is playing a build with localized text, in the actual game, not in a spreadsheet.

People are often surprised by how much the numbers vary depending on language pair, content type, and quality tier. Here’s a realistic breakdown based on rates I’ve seen quoted and paid in 2026:

Localization QA Is Its Own Thing
I want to be direct about this: if your QA plan doesn’t have a specific loc QA phase, you don’t have a QA plan for localization. Standard functional QA will catch maybe 20% of loc bugs, mostly the catastrophic ones. It won’t catch truncated strings, tone inconsistencies, incorrect gendered grammar, or missing translations that fell through because a string was added after the last export.
Loc QA should include: a linguist-led playthrough in each language (doesn’t have to be the whole game, but all major systems and story beats), a text overflow check across all UI elements, a search for any remaining English strings in a non-English build, and a review of any dynamic string insertion (player names, item counts, variable text) in context.
If you can’t afford full linguistic QA in every language, prioritize your highest-volume markets. For most Western studios right now, that’s German, French, and one of the Spanish variants. Japanese and Korean markets are significant but have higher expectations for quality, so if you’re cutting corners, those are the ones that will generate the most negative community response.
